A new neighborhood pub in Lorain features handcrafted cocktails created from historic recipes, some as old as hundreds of years.
Owners Page and Kurt Hernon bought the early 1900s building in downtown Lorain, renovated it, and on Dec. 16 opened Speak of the Devil. A cocktail historian, Kurt Hernon researches cocktail recipes and offers to customers a new cocktail experience based on forgotten mixtures from long ago.
The original intention was to offer a high quality night spot similar to those found in Cleveland suburbs, and Lorain people responded with solid business growth sooner than expected.
Page Hernon said one of the best-selling drinks – bees knees, of gin, fresh lemon juice and honey – was concocted during the prohibition. Also, a partnership emerged as a Smash food truck vendor assumed permanent residence in the kitchen of Speak of the Devil Lorain, serving gourmet pizza and street tacos.
