An unexpectedly delicious brunch option: Platform Beer Co.

I don’t remember ever having a beer before noon, but there is a first time for everything.

When a friend visiting from out of town asked if I had a suggestion for where we could meet for brunch, I couldn’t get the image of Platform Beer Co.‘s brewhouse brunch waffle sandwiches out of my head. I had been to the Lorain Avenue tasting room and knew there was no kitchen, and it didn’t seem like a food truck set up. So, intrigued and curious, we decided to check it out.

We visited on a beautiful, warm Sunday morning (perfect patio weather!!), which of course meant beers and brunch on the patio, where there’s ample seating and umbrellas to shade from the sun. Brunch is made on griddles and waffle makers at the front of the taproom, so the menu is fairly limited. But that’s fine because it’s delicious.

We both ordered a BELT — bacon, egg, lettuce and tomato — on a pilsner waffle. (You can also get the sandwiches on bagels from Cleveland Bagel Co., which is located just less than a mile away on Detroit Avenue.) The savory waffle was a tasty stand-in for bread, and so so so fresh. A waffle BLT is kind of the perfect brunch food — it’s literally the combination of breakfast and lunch.

How well does a beer go down with brunch? Depends on the quality of your beer, I suppose, and the quality of Platform Beer is excellent. I had the Beyond Borders, a saison/farmhouse ale that includes a frosty pina colada flavor. So, you know, basically like juice with breakfast.
