Check out a lumberjack demonstration in Avon

Jack Riese and Pat Holbert carve a tree stump with a chainsaw and plenty of imagination. Riese began about 40 years ago by carving telephone poles with chisels into to totem poles inspired by an interest in Native American culture.

Watch them chip away at what is until it becomes what it will be in the hands of artists.

The lumberjack demonstration is 1 to 3 p.m. Nov. 18 at Miller Nature Preserve at 2739 Center Road in Avon, which is south of the Route 2 exit.

All ages are welcome to the demonstration which is free, but touring the conservatory at Miller Nature Preserve does require a modest fee. Visit www.metroparks.cc.

By the way, a family package of ear plugs might be a good idea.
